LATE NIGHT
The other night I got about two hours of sleep.
I don’t know what was keeping me up. It could have been the chili I had at Havana Restaurant in New Hope earlier that evening. It tasted really good, great in fact (their chili is award winning) but I am not used to eating chili. Or it could have been the two glasses of wine I had along with the chili (also very good.) But that would normally make me sleepy. It could be the stress (can you say divorce?)
Whatever . . . I get out of bed at 2:30 AM – remember, I have not slept yet. I walk down the hallway to my office, turn on the computer, and respond to some emails. I decide to turn on the TV to see what programs night owls watch in the wee morning hours. Valerie Bertinelli is smiling at the camera and touting the oohs and ahhhs of Cindy Crawford’s line of beauty products called Meaningful Beauty. At first I discount the information as pure marketing hype. Still, I am strangely drawn to the before and after photos (untouched of course) of women who have used these products. The clincher is when they show two photos of Cindy (by now, we are all on a first name basis) - one current and the other taken over fifteen years ago. The photos look identical.
Ok. Now I am totally awake. I can look like Cindy Crawford?
Yes, they say. In just two short weeks my skin will be remarkably different. In three months, my skin will actually look younger – yes, firmer and with less wrinkles than before. Who am I to call Valerie a liar?
At least this is what I remember coming off of a sleep deprived night. All this may be a bit fuzzy which, I have since surmised, is why they have sales pitches on at 3 AM. Only a small percentage of people watch these late night sales shows, but, because people’s defenses are down, 98% of viewers BUY everything that is presented to them. You don't want to mess with them percentages.
It was at some point during the half hour commercial (more fuzziness) - maybe after I was calculating the amount of time it was going to take me every day to actually use these products (a huge commitment for someone whose entire beauty routine consists of washing her face with water and organic soap and afterwards slathering on a layer of $2.49 a container E-cream) - that I realized that NOBODY is ever going to look like Cindy Crawford except, yep, you got it, Cindy Crawford.
At one point in the program, they showed Cindy walking side by side with her mother and sisters. She looked like a 10 foot Avatar woman (minus the blue hue) walking next to her human counterparts. Even her own family looks nothing like her!
The Cindy Crawford beauty secret we DON'T hear about is her daily stretching regimen (probably on some kind of medieval torture device) to ensure that she maintains her tall slender frame – unlike the rest of us who are shrinking as we speak. Just the other day I was looking at my weight versus height recommended body weight chart. If I were 6’2” tall, I would be within the “normal” and healthy category. Being only 5”4, I figure I have to either do some drastic weight reduction OR I need to find me one of those stretching machines to make me taller.
NowTHAT would make an interesting infomercial? Sign me up!
OK, back to Meaningful Beauty.
When I called to order my low introductory price offer of Meaningful Beauty, my (soon to be beautiful and laugh line-free) eyes had glazed over and I was happily imagining my new radiant visage turning heads throughout all of Bucks County. I robotically gave the nice woman on the other end of the phone my Amex number and agreed to the $7.95 shipping charge.
Wait, there’s more.
If I agree to take the two additional products Cindy insists are “must haves” (they will moisturize not only my crow’s feet but, more importantly, my aging décolletage as well!) then I can be locked in forever at the amazing low price of only $34 per month and $9.95 shipping. (Oh yes, it costs more for shipping because of the two extra products.)
Was it all a dream? Did I really order Meaningful Beauty? I guess I will know within the next few days when the package arrives.
And in three months if you see someone in town who vaguely resembles Cindy Crawford , don’t worry, it’s just me!
