COMPUTER WOES

Better late than not at all! I was ready to send out the newsletter last week, when..... my hard drive failed. I don't say that it "crashed" because it didn't fail completely. I was able to start it again the next day just long enough to save my files. Whew! (I lost an external hard drive a couple of months ago. It crashed! Luckily, I had just backed it up several days before.)

I took my tower computer to Terminal 54 in Logan Square and they did a great job at fixing the multiple problems on it. Virus, spyware, who knows what else. What is so frustrating is that I have virus protection and a firewall on my computer. What I didn't know about was this thing called a "blue screen." I had been getting blue screen errors off and on for the past month or so. I pretty much ignored this error, hoping, I guess, that the issue would clear up on its own. DUH!

Listen up folks, if you get a blue screen error even once, run, don't walk, to the nearest computer fix-it place. Blue Screen equals trouble - big time. And you can be sure it will get you when you least want it to happen. (Like me, trying to send out the newsletter.)

I am pretty sure Apple Mac people don't have to worry about this. My dream is to someday switch back to a Macintosh computer. I have been using Windows so long, all of my software is Windows based. It will cost a small fortune to switch everything over to Mac at this point.

Long ago, I used Macintosh when it first came out in 1984. Remember the 1984 Superbowl commercial with the sledgehammer wielding woman? That year is when I started selling computers at Clancy-Paul in Princeton, NJ. Back then, not only did I have to sell the computer, I had to put it together (populate the memory card, install the memory card, install the floppy / hard drives, load the software, etc.) and sometimes I would even deliver the computer, set it up, and train the customer on how to use it. Seems like a hundred years ago. In 1984, there were not even hard drives for personal computers. Who of you can remember THAT?

It is just about impossible nowadays to stay on top of computer updates and such - unless you are a true geekster. Tomorrow, I am going to get a lesson on the best way to save data on my external drive so that I can back it up every week on a second external drive.

No more of this hairy scary computer crash stay awake at night stomach churning fearful of losing all my data and email files nonsense.
